To go straight to Lacan\u2019s work, without the complement of secondary resources to make a bit sense of it all, is a brave and difficult endeavour. There are of course many books out there so\u00a0I thought I would share some of the references which\u00a0have been of great help to me at the start of my &#8216;journey&#8217;, and some of which still are,\u00a0and that I know other people around me have also benefitted from. Here is my list of suggestive starting points:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Freud<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If you&#8217;re serious about getting your teeth into Lacanian theory, Freud is an essential and logical starting point, which Lacan stresses with his &#8216;Return to Freud&#8217; project. <strong>Freud&#8217;s<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Interpretation-Dreams-Classics-World-Literature\/dp\/1853264849\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483476559&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=the+interpretation+of+dreams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Interpretation of Dreams<\/em><\/a> provides a great basis for starting to understand Lacan&#8217;s ideas, specifically his\u00a0famous maxim &#8220;the unconscious is structured like a language&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>General Books on Lacanian Theory<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sean Homer<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Jacques-Lacan-Routledge-Critical-Thinkers\/dp\/0415256178\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483476632&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=sean+homer+jacques+lacan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Jacques Lacan<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nA very accessible book that works well as a first contact with the theory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slavoj\u00a0<span class=\"a-size-small a-color-secondary\">\u017d<\/span>i\u017eek<span class=\"a-size-small a-color-secondary\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/How-Read-Lacan-Slavoj-Zizek\/dp\/1862078947\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483476688&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=how+to+read+lacan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>How to Read Lacan<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nIntroduction to Lacan&#8217;s ideas through the lens of popular culture and ideology.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bruce Fink<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Lacanian-Subject-Jouissance-Princeton-Paperbacks\/dp\/0691015899\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483476712&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=the+subject+of+jouissance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Lacanian\u00a0Subject: Between Language and\u00a0Jouissance<\/a><\/em><br \/>\nInvaluable book for grasping complex, core ideas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calum Neill<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Lacanian-Ethics-Assumption-Subjectivity-Calum\/dp\/023029409X\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483476941&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=calum+neill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Without Ground: Lacanian Ethics and the Assumption of Subjectivity<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nA unique\u00a0book containing clear and in-depth\u00a0readings of\u00a0Lacan&#8217;s essential concepts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stijn Vanheule<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/d\/cka\/Subject-Psychosis-Lacanian-Perspective-S-Vanheule\/1137462582\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483719389&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Subject of Psychosis: A Lacanian Perspective<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nWhile the focus is mainly on psychosis, this\u00a0is one of the best books which\u00a0coherently outlines the development of Lacan&#8217;s thoughts\u00a0in relation to his\u00a0general theory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dylan Evans &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Introductory-Dictionary-Lacanian-Psychoanalysis\/dp\/0415135230\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483477108&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=dylan+evans+lacan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>An Introductory Dictionary of Lacanian Psychoanalysis<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re looking for specific concepts to learn about briefly, this dictionary is a valuable partner which outlines over 200 Lacanian terms and how they were developed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Darian Leader &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Introducing-Lacan-Graphic-Darian-Leader\/dp\/1848311834\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483637449&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=Introducing+Lacan%3A+A+Graphic+Guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Introducing Lacan: A Graphic Guide<\/a><br \/>\n<\/em>If you prefer something graphic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Clinically Oriented Introductory Books<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>While all books mentioned above are more or less clinically relevant, if you&#8217;re a practitioner with little time to spare, here\u00a0are some more clinically focused introductory books:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bruce Fink<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Clinical-Introduction-Lacanian-Psychoanalysis\/dp\/0674135369\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483477271&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=a+clinical+introduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A Clinical Introduction to\u00a0Lacanian Psychoanalysis<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bruce Fink<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Fundamentals-Psychoanalytic-Technique-Lacanian-Practitioners\/dp\/0393707253\/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=1483477371&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Fundamentals \u00a0of Psychoanalytic Technique: A Lacanian Approach for Practitioners<\/em><\/a>:<br \/>\nA more practical and highly accessible book for those who wish to apply Lacanian ideas in their practice, or are just interested in how the theory is applied in practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Lacanian Discourse Analysis\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Lacan\u00a0did not establish a way of conducting discourse analysis that goes under the name\u00a0&#8216;Lacanian Discourse Analysis&#8217;. However he did offer conceptual tools which others have built on in developing a Lacanian approach to discourse analysis, specifically David Pavon Cuellar, Ian Parker and Calum Neill. Here are their\u00a0core writings on the topic of doing discourse analysis &#8216;Lacanian style&#8217;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Calum Neill <\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0959354312473520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Breaking the Text: An Introduction to Lacanian Discourse Analysis<\/a><br \/>\n<\/em>Excellent introduction that does not presuppose knowledge of Lacanian theory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ian Parker <\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1057\/pcs.2009.21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Psychosocial Studies:<\/em> <em>Lacanian Discourse Analysis Negotiating Interview Text<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>David Pavon Cuellar<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Conscious-Interior-Exterior-Unconscious-Psychology\/dp\/185575794X\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483640200&amp;sr=8-3&amp;keywords=david+pavon+cuellar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>From the Conscious Interior to an Exterior Unconscious: Lacan, Discourse Analysis and Social Psychology<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Lacan&#8217;s Seminars &amp; Writings<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Lacan held\u00a0annual seminars in Paris which have been\u00a0transcribed, and some of which have been edited and published by Jacques-Alain Miller (and translated into English). Those which\u00a0have not been published can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lacaninireland.com\/web\/published-works\/seminars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a> and have been translated into English by Cormac Gallagher. Each seminar has a title that indicates the theme of the seminar. For example seminar X is called &#8216;Anxiety&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Lacan&#8217;s core writings are collected and published under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Ecrits-Complete-English-Jacques-Lacan\/dp\/0393329259\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>\u00c9crits<\/em><\/a>. This\u00a0is not an\u00a0easy reading by all means\u00a0(be warned), but there are secondary resources\u00a0making sense of some of the essays which can be helpful, for example Bruce Fink&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Lacan-Letter-Reading-Ecrits-Closely\/dp\/0816643210\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483550234&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=ecrit+lacan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Lacan to the Letter: Reading \u00c9crits Closely<\/em><\/a>.
